The annual married vs singles match went ahead as usual on St. Stephen's Day. The icy conditions early in the morning looked like it might cause a problem but the blazing sunshine softened the frost a little and the playing conditions were perfect. There was the usual controversy over whether certain individuals should be on the married team due to "de facto" marriage status. Strenuous protest from the same individuals ( I never signed anything) ensured they togged out with the singles. The experience of the old-heads gave the marrieds a two point half time lead with a standout performance from John Sammon. However the singles, having sweated out the their Christmas Day carousing in the first half, stepped up a couple of gears in the second half to take victory by five points. Club Treasurer Tony Fitzpatrick presented a new cup to the winning captain Ian Brady. There should be a few graduations from single to married next year which should bring the average age of the auld boys down, so bring on 2010. A few festive drinks were had by all in the club after the game. Many thanks to Paul Rigney and Mark Fitzpatrick for organising this years event.
